-
Residence Requirement
- You must have lived in Iceland for at least 6 months.
- If you have not been a permanent resident in Iceland for over 6 months, you must provide proof that you have lived and worked here during that period.
-
Visit the District Commissioner’s Office
- The office will scan your current driving license.
- You must bring a passport photo (size: 35x45mm).
- You will also need to provide your signature.
-
Health Certificate
- A health certificate is required.
- Book an appointment at your nearest healthcare center specifically for a driving license health check.
-
Application Form and Payment

- Pay the necessary fees for the Icelandic driving license.
-
Written Test and Driving Evaluation
- Your application will be sent to Frumherji, where you will take a written exam.
- After passing the written exam, you must contact a licensed driving instructor. The instructor will:
- Evaluate your driving skills.
- Create a driving practice plan, if necessary.
- Assist in booking the driving evaluation with Frumherji.
- The written test is available in several languages. You can book the test through Frumherji’s website.
-
Issuance of the Icelandic License
- Once you pass the test, Frumherji will send the documents back to the District Commissioner’s office.
- The District Commissioner will then order your Icelandic driver’s license.
- You will receive both your Icelandic license and you can also keep your original foreign license.
