D Certification (Large Bus)

 

The D license category grants the right to drive a large bus for commercial purposes. Individuals who obtain a D license are authorized to work as bus drivers and may charge a fee for their services. This license also allows driving the bus with a trailer weighing up to 750 kg in total. To tow a heavier trailer, DE certification is required.

The age requirement for a D license is 23 years. Additionally, the individual must hold a full driving license in the B category.

When can I obtain a D license?

An individual who is at least 23 years old and holds a full driving license can obtain a D license.

How much theoretical training is required for a D license?

You need to complete 100 lessons, consisting of 52 lessons in the basic course and 48 lessons in the advanced course. This takes approximately 20 working days.

How many driving lessons do I need to take?

You need to complete 12 practical driving lessons, plus a double exam session, totaling 14 hours.

Note: Those who already hold a C license only need to take 8 practical driving lessons, plus a double exam session, totaling 10 hours.

What do I need to do to tow a trailer heavier than 750 kg?

To tow a trailer or equipment heavier than 750 kg, you need to obtain DE certification. You can read more about DE certification by clicking here.

Will I obtain commercial driving rights with a D license after completing the course?

Yes.

The general price for D certification is ISK 450,000, which includes all theoretical and practical training.

Those who have previously completed advanced certifications (C or B/Far [taxi]) do not need to pay the full course fee.

Do I also get D1 and B/Far certification with D certification?

Yes, those who obtain a D license also receive D1 and B/Far (BFF) certification. However, to drive a taxi, it is necessary to complete a course called Harkaranámskeið. Please note that Ekill Driving School does not offer this course.

DE License

A Category DE license grants the right to drive a D-category bus with a trailer exceeding 750 kg in total weight. Students who obtain trailer rights in category DE will also have those rights apply to category CE.

Please note that to obtain a DE license, the individual must first have completed a D-category license.

When obtaining a DE license, the student must also attend three lessons on “Trailers for Large Vehicles.” This is part of the advanced driving course. It is best to check the current schedule to see when this is taught.

Do I also receive CE and D1E rights if I obtain a DE license?

Yes. A person with a DE license also receives CE, D1E, and BE license rights.

Price for DE License

The cost of a DE license is 160,000 ISK, which includes theoretical and practical training along with the practical test session. Note that if additional practical lessons are needed beyond the seven mentioned above, they must be paid for separately.

If the individual already holds a D1E license, only four driving lessons plus the test session are required, reducing the course fee to 135,000 ISK.
