D1 & D1E
D1 Certification
The D1 license category grants the right to drive a minibus for up to 16 passengers for commercial purposes. With a D1 license, the individual is authorized to work as a driver of such vehicles and is allowed to charge a fee for the service. This license also permits driving the vehicle with a trailer that has a total weight of up to 750 kg. To tow a heavier trailer, D1E certification is required.
Individuals who obtain D1 certification also automatically receive B/Far (or BFF) certification, which allows them to drive vehicles with up to 8 passengers and charge a fee for the service. Note that anyone intending to drive a taxi must complete a special Taxi Driver Course(“harkaranámskeið”).

An individual who is at least 21 years old and holds a full driving license can obtain D1 certification.
How much theoretical training is required for D1 certification?
You need to complete 78 lessons, consisting of 52 lessons in the basic course and 32 lessons in the advanced course. This takes approximately 16 working days.

How many driving lessons do I need to take?

Note: Those who already hold C1 certification only need to complete 2 practical driving lessons, plus one exam session, totaling 3 hours.
What do I need to do to tow a trailer heavier than 750 kg?
To tow a trailer or equipment heavier than 750 kg, you need to obtain D1E certification. You can read more about D1E certification by clicking here.
Will I obtain commercial driving rights with D1 certification after completing the course?
Yes.
Pricelist for D1 Certification
The general price for D1 certification is ISK 310,000, which includes all theoretical and practical training.
Those who have previously completed advanced certifications (C1 or B/Far [taxi]) do not need to pay the full course fee.

Do I get permission to drive a taxi if I obtain D1 certification?
Those who obtain D1 certification also receive B/Far (BFF) certification. However, to drive a taxi, it is necessary to complete a course called Harkaranámskeið. Please note that Ekill Driving School does not offer this course.
D1E Certification
The D1E license category grants the right to drive a minibus in the D1 category with a trailer exceeding 750 kg in total weight. However, the combined total weight of both vehicles must not exceed 12,000 kg.
Note: The D1E license also includes C1E certification for those who previously held a C1 license.
